Today we continue our series on 6 vision benefits trends that are turning “why” to “wow” by looking at trend #2: One-size-fits-all vision benefits are too constrictive to satisfy your entire workforce.


Since vision is a voluntary benefit, members must be satisfied with the value they receive. Think about it: if you’re dissatisfied with a good or service, you’ll find another place to get what you need. If employees are dissatisfied with their benefits, utilization will be low, enrollment will decline and employee perceptions of your overall benefits program will suffer.


And yet, many employers continue to offer a single-tiered vision plan for their employees – often at the expense of those using the benefit.


During the past 10 years, vision premiums have remained relatively flat compared to increases in other health care segments. While fixed premiums help control employer costs, it means more cost has shifted to members at the point of service.


Offering a multi-tiered vision plan—one with high, medium and low coverage options—increases not just savings at the point of service, but also utilization, enrollment and, most importantly, employee satisfaction. Why? Because different people have different vision needs. Do you want contact lenses? Do you want economical frames and basic lenses? Or do you want designer frames and the latest in lens technology to help you see life to the fullest? Employees’ vision needs should dictate their vision benefits, not the other way around.


What does that mean for you? It may be time to consider a multi-tiered option vision plan that’s likely to meet more employees’ specific benefit needs – especially when coupled with a decision support tool  to help employees select the right plan for their lifestyle needs.


The take-away of this trend: No one wants to pay for more benefits than they need—nor do they want to feel like they don’t have enough coverage.
